One layer chick lost...

I'm quite choked about this. After keeping all 52 chicks alive for three weeks, I accidentally dropped the heat lamp and it landed on one of the layer chicks, mortally wounding it. Katie was with me so I had to be cool and collected, but had I been alone I probably would have had a little freak-out.

Stephen was also very upset and after insisting on looking at it, claims it was one of the ones he named (great). So now I'm the one who "killed" the chick. I keep explaining it was an accident while at the same time wondering how long it will take for everybody to stop glaring at me...

We are in real trouble when the time comes to butcher the meat birds...

I wonder if, when it comes time to eat the ones that will be eaten, you can prepare the ground by talking about how animals in factory farming are treated, the chemicals and hormones they are fed (which then go into us), and maybe do a little Native-American type ceremony where you thank the spirit of the animal? Maybe watch Lion King and talk about the circle of life... (just brainstorming some ideas)

Aw, poor chick, poor kids, poor you!

And I think this city girl must decline the invitation to come help with your poultry 'harvest'. Eek! (And no, I don't think I'm even brave enough to see photos of the event.)

Actually, a cute SciFi actor that I like has a very amusing anecdote about a 'poultry harvest' in his childhood:
